You’ve probably seen them – all those memes that say “A day without LipSense? Never!” and other clever things to note how addicting this product can be to its devotees. I’d seen the product all over Facebook and a girlfriend of mine insisted that I try it because she was “obsessed”. So, what is this wonder-product?!

LipSense Claims

The product claims to be ‘lip color that lasts until you take it off’. Their website says the following:

“LipSense is the premier product of SeneGence and is unlike any conventional lipstick, stain or color. As the original long-lasting lip color, it is waterproof, does not kiss-off, smear-off, rub-off or budge-off! Create your own color palette by combining colors from over 50 shades.”

Does it really do all of these things? I set out to give it a try for myself!

Here is my experience trying LipSense:

Getting Started

So, what do you need to get started? You’ll need a color, gloss and remover (shown below). Their product lineup includes over 50 different shades to choose from as well as a lip balm, gloss, volumizer and remover. Product prices range from $10 to $25 (USD). The starter kit runs around $50 USD.

Color Selection

LipSense has over 50 different shades to choose from and they can be layered/blended to create custom shades, too. Most of these colors are universal in that they look good on almost every skin tone. I chose a few of my favorites to show you just how universal they are! (P.S. a simple Google Image search will bring this up for any color, which is incredibly helpful for deciding on a color!)

I decided to start with Apple Cider because I figured it would be neutral enough that I could live with it all day. I’m generally not one to gravitate towards a bold lip, so I wanted to start small. Here I am!

Colors range from neutrals to bold and everything in between. If you aren’t sure where to begin, here is a chart of potential “starter colors” that one of their sales people provided:

The Application Process

With this product, application is key! It’s important to apply it in layers, letting your lips dry between coats. Ensure you get all the way to the edges of your lips, but be cautious of applying too far out (the product doesn’t bleed, but it hangs on for dear life!). Once you’ve applied the appropriate number of layers for color potency, top it off with Lipsense gloss!

How To Apply LipSense

When I applied the clear gloss/top coat, I was stunned to see that no color bled onto the brush at all – like, zero. This color was on my lips and it wasn’t budging. It didn’t matter if I ate, drank, went to the gym, kissed my husband or anything – this stuff wasn’t coming off!

When I got to the end of the day, I actually had to use a makeup remover to get the color off of my lips (it wouldn’t budge with my regular cleanser). Their long-lasting, budge-proof claims are definitely true! I didn’t try their remover, but I hear it’s fantastic for those “oops!” moments during application (especially of deep, bold colors like the one shown above).

Durability & Long Wear

I think that one of the best selling features of this product is its durability. It seriously lasts a LONG time. In my mind, this is both a positive and a negative. If you work a long day and want your lip color to go the distance, this is the product for you. If you’re someone who likes to switch things up throughout the day, then you can always layer the product. For example, maybe you’re looking for a more muted shade for the work day, but then want a bold lip for cocktail hour – simply layer a deeper shade onto your existing color and re-top with gloss.

To me, the durability and long wear of this product is its best selling feature. No one wants to have to reapply color at a cocktail party, wedding or other event. When you only have to reapply gloss, you don’t need a mirror and your color is always perfect!

Texture & Scent

Like many others, I’m one of those people who likes my lipgloss to smell good. Whether it’s fruity or smells like candy; even if it’s just fresh and fairly unscented, I like it to be pleasant. I found the gloss to be completely unscented, or at the very least like a run of the mill petroleum product. I found the color, however, to be quite potent. I would dub the product as “lip paint” because it adhered and smelled like it. This scent dissipates fairly quickly (especially once sealed with the gloss) but it took me by surprise none the less.

Moisture Levels

I found that I needed to continuously apply the gloss throughout the day, but that’s pretty normal for any gloss, really. I did find that my lips were quite dry from the color and that they peeled a bit the first few times I wore it. This got better over time. I’m more of a luxe, creamy lipstick or moisturizing tinted balm or gloss kind of girl.

Packaging & Pricing

I don’t love their packaging. I know it sounds silly, but I find it to be a bit dated and boring. I prefer luxe makeup packaging (think: Charlotte Tilbury’s rose gold containers) and want something that looks pretty in my hand when I’m reapplying it (especially for how often I felt the gloss needed to be reapplied).

I think the price point is very competitive and fair for the product. I’m more than willing to pay $35 lip color that wears off, so for something that lasts like this, it’s definitely well-priced. They also claim that one tube of LipSense lasts as long as 4 tubes of traditional lipstick.

Final Thoughts…

LipSense is a great product for long-lasting lip color, just as it claims. The product doesn’t need to be applied very thick, so a tube goes a long way. I love the selection and variety of colors and how they can be blended for custom shades. I didn’t love the scent of the color or how difficult it was to remove (although that is also a selling feature!). The packaging isn’t my favorite and I think it could use a design upgrade. Overall, I’ve never been someone to gravitate towards kiss-proof, long-lasting color in general, but if I were, this product would be a top contender.

How to Buy LipSense

Full disclosure, this is a MLM. The product is created by a company called SeneGence. I don’t personally sell this product and am not affiliated with the company in any way. I think the business idea is great because women can never seen to have enough lip colors!
