Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2022 has been announced and it is Very Peri (PANTONE 17-3938). The shade is a pretty periwinkle from the blue family with tones of red violet.
You know I’m not someone to bend to trends and I always lean towards classic neutrals BUT that doesn’t mean that I don’t like to have some fun with trending tones like this one. If I’m being honest, when I saw this year’s colour choice I wasn’t feeling it, but the more I think about the deep tone, the more inspired I feel to incorporate it into my home.
I’m not suggesting that you paint a feature wall (or entire room!) this shade, or start picking out backsplash tile either. I like to sit with a colour for quite some time before incorporating it in a very real, permanent way, in my home. What you’ll find in this post are a few non-permanent and semi-permanent ways to use Very Peri in your interior design and home decor this year.
Very Peri Palettes
It can be tricky to know how a new shade will fit into your existing decor, so here are the palettes that Pantone has provided to help guide you:
Palette: “Star of the Show”
This is my favorite of the palettes. It shows us how we can incorporate a lively colour like Very Peri into an otherwise neutral environment. I love how these colours allow the lovely purple tones to pop and thrive.
Palette: “Balancing Act”
This palette is a balance of warm and cool tones for those who prefer something more lively! I love that this palette allows for a stunning pop of a new shade among otherwise muted, boho tones. Perfect for a modern-bohemian vibe.
Palette: “Wellspring”
The Wellspring palette uses varying shades of green and other colours found in nature. Its goal is to emphasize the ‘health-giving’ attributes of Very Peri.
Palette: “Amusements”
This palette is well-named! I find the accompanying tones to be bright, cheerful and fun. These are colours that I would love to see in a gorgeous patterned rug or festive table runner.
Be sure to check out Pantone.com for all of the details on how to use the shades in these palettes appropriately.
Very Peri Florals
When I see a deep blue-purple periwinkle like Very Peri, my mind immediately goes to floral arrangements. Florals are one of my favorite ways to add colour to a space. They’re often inexpensive, they’re non-permanent and come in a ton of shapes and sizes.
I am also a huge fan of geometric vases. I’m finding this shade to be a bit hard to find in home decor accessories right now, so my best advice is to find an inexpensive piece that you love and paint it! These vases from Target’s Project62 collection are the perfect candidate!
Very Peri Art Prints
I’ve talked a fair bit about my love of art prints and the ability to swap them in and out of frames seasonally or as the mood strikes you. Adding a pop of trending colour to an existing gallery wall is a great way to incorporate it into your decor.
With a shade like Very Peri there are so many different tone levels that you can pull to add it into a gallery wall. Go deeper, go more muted, go with an ombre print. The possibilities are endless.
I love how a deep blue-purple like this lends itself to magical and majestic art prints. Whether you like something more imaginative for a nursery or something classic like floral photography, you’re sure to find something that fits nicely into your home.
Very Peri Textiles
Textiles are a wonderful way to add a touch of Very Peri to your home. If this is a colour that you find speaks to you like no other, then go ahead and order an upholstered sofa, but for the rest of us who have a neutral grey sofa (i.e. me) a few throw pillows or a knit throw will do the job.
Very Peri Living Room Textiles
Living rooms seem to be the first place that we look to “re-decorate” every time a new trend comes a long. I like to keep my living room super neutral. My flooring, fireplace, furnishings, etc. serve as a backdrop for changing seasonal decor or any desire to add a pop of colour when the mood strikes me. The simplest textile options to add to your living room are of course new covers for your throw pillows or a throw blanket (TIP: opt for a textured weave instead of a solid colour for either of these if you aren’t 100% on the colour).
Want to go a little more bold with adding Very Peri to your space? You could go so far as to add the shade in a new set of curtains or a bold new area rug!
Very Peri Kitchen & Dining Textiles
Kitchen and dining textiles are some of the easiest to swap in and out seasonally or as trends inspire you. Dish towels, napkins, and table runners are all easy options. If you want to be really bold you could swap in an appetizer plate in a fun pattern that features the colour with your every day white dishes. I did this about 10 years ago when I had a thing for teal but didn’t want to commit to it on a large scale.
Very Peri Bedding & Bath Textiles
I love to be able to add a trending colour into a bedroom or bathroom with a few simple touches. Rather than dive into bath towels or a new duvet cover, my advice is to opt for pillow cases or hand towels in a new shade (i.e the most disposable of your white items). These small additions will also give you a chance to decide if this is a shade you even like in a space, rather than jumping into a huge splash like a bed spread or set of curtains.
Very Peri Accessories
Looking for something a little less-committal for adding this trending shade into your home? Here are a few ideas of purple-toned accessories you can pop in and out:
- Candles, Candle Holders, Votives.
- A glossy tray that sits on your countertop, coffee table, bedside, etc.
- A change pad cover in a nursery.
