Market Collective Annual Survey – $800 Prize!
Market Collective grew from an initial idea, but it quickly became much more than that. The MC is the development of ideas from the artists, food vendors, designers, musicians, and our incredible team of staff and volunteers. Most importantly, it is the reflection of creative thought by all of us, and the beautiful community that has been formed along the way.
We want to extend our sincere gratitude to all of you. To the team that has been incredible, the artists and vendors that have been like family, and the community of visitors that have warmed us with their presence. Now, as we grow into the new year, we want to hear your voices.
We have developed a survey to hear your thoughts, opinions, and to get to know a little bit more about all of you. As we grow, we want to make the right decisions for everyone involved in the MC, and realize that means you. Please take the time to fill out the questions. Some will be simple facts, some will be more insightful, but all will help us make the market you want to see in your city.
As an added thank you, we will randomly choose one lucky person to receive an $800 shopping spree to the Market Collective, redeemable at any of our events.
Thank you, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts.

JULY MC | MUSICIAN SCHEDULE | 2016
Friday, July 8 >>> Tomi Fujiyama <<< 8pm
“Made in Japan” is the remarkable story of Tomi Fujiyama, the world’s first Japanese country music superstar. From playing the USO circuit throughout Asia to headlining in Las Vegas and recording 5 albums for Columbia records, Tomi’s career culminates in a 1964 performance at The Grand Ole Opry where she followed Johnny Cash and received the only standing ovation of the night.
At the age of 73, with a spark in her heart and a guitar in her hand, Tomi and her husband set out on a journey through Japan and across the United States to fulfill a dream of performing at The Grand Ole Opry one more time. Tomi weaves an inspirational and often hilarious story of hope and heartbreak.
“Made in Japan” is a funny yet poignant multi-cultural journey through music, marriage, and the impact of the corporate world on the dreams of one woman.

Friday, July 8 >>> Amy Nelson <<< 7pm
Amy Nelson is an old-time clawhammer banjoist and traditional folk singer. Her influences range from old blues, ragtime, country and mountain music. She sings from the gut and harkens back to a time long ago when music was not only a form of entertainment but a way of connecting to the heart of everyday people.
Friday, July 8 >>> Hank Zappa <<< 4-7pm
Saturday, July 9 >>> Kinfolk DJs <<< All Day
Saturday, July 9 >>> I Am The Mountain <<< Noon
Saturday, July 9 >>> Abby Maxwell <<< 1pm
Saturday, July 9 >>> Peer Support <<< 4pm
A five-piece melodic indie rock act from Calgary with influences as diverse as the city that they call home. Combining thoughtful musicality with a fun and energetic live show, they’re always ready to play music for new faces.
Sunday, July 10 >>> Rosalind <<< Noon
Formed in the early months of 2015, Rosalind started as a collaboration between friends Mike Röckin, Jesse Shire and Amanda Noelle that quickly proved to have substantial chemistry and compatibility.
After several months and an outpouring of positive feedback, Rosalind looked to expand their sound from guitar, banjo, mandolin and three-part harmonies to include bass, violin and drums, utilising each instrument’s unique voice to create a blended and full soundscape.
Their songs aim to relate to the spectrum of emotions and experiences our daily lives are rife with, and will leave a lasting impression long after their last note has been played.
Sunday, July 10 >>> Rotary Park <<< 1pm
Rotary Park is a Calgary based band playing a special brand of harmony driven, alternative bluegrass. The combination of ambient folk music, powerful vocal harmonies and banjo ripping bluegrass brings a unique brand of Canadian music to the table.
Sunday, July 10 >>> OQO <<< 4pm
OQO means balance. This coastal Canadian trio sounds like a ménage-a-six between Yann Tiersen, Sigur Rós, Beirut, Gogol Bordello, Cinematic Orchestra and Phillip Glass. The band writes original, cinematic, operatic folklore for Accordion, Violin, Voice, Contrabass and the occasional Synthesizer.
Ian Griffiths on Accordion and synth, Keith Rodger on Upright Bass and Jacques Mindreau on Violin and Voice have been enchanting audiences across Canada with performances at Arts Wells Festival, Tiny Lights Festival, South Country Fair, Deep Roots Music Fest, Market Fest, Market Collective and dozens of others.
OQO is set to release their second album “OQO Pt. 2” June 1st 2016. The band will be touring the record across Canada from June through August 2016. Find tour dates at www.oqomusic.com.
OQO is made up of members from two prominent Canadian folk bands, The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra and Krasnogorsk. Originally a duo, OQO began as a collaboration between Accordionist, Songwriter Ian Griffiths and Violinist, Composer, Vocal Virtuoso Jacques Mindreau. The pair were joined in 2014 by Mount Royal University Jazz Performance graduate Keith Rodger on Upright Bass.
MC DEBUT ARTIST | WILDROPE | JENNY BALLANCE
Jenny Balance: smart, beautiful, and sophisticated, she is the brains behind Wild Rope, a new company based on the love of dogs and style. Based on a traditional nautical technique, Jenny splices and whips her own rope, and then uses a technique of traditional dyeing to blend design with function. Each rope is 100% cotton, and 110% sweet. We had a chance to chat with Jenny and learn more about this craft, the new endeavour and to celebrate her as this July MC’s Debut Artist.
Tell us a little about your business and how you got started:
You have such a unique idea and clearly love dogs. What is your favourite thing about dogs?
I have a one year old Whippet, named Wylee. She is my number one WildRope model and tester. She is always by our side wherever we go and has really made our lives full of so much happiness.
Calgary is a beautiful place to walk and enjoy nature. What are some of your usual stomping grounds?
You have been chosen as the Market Collective Debut Artist. What are you most excited about with joining MC?
How can people get ahold of you, or connect more with you and your work?
PLEASE SHARE YOUR LOVE
At the Market Collective, we have worked with thousands of artists and supporters over the years. Some people pop in and move on, and others stay to become your family of friends.
We met Aman and Steph over their amazing food from Naaco, and simply saw them as a quirky couple that made delicious treats. We fell in love with them, and their support to the MC has been phenomenal. However, life exists far beyond the MC weekend walls, and everyone at the end of Sunday’s mayhem packs up and ends up back at home base. Steph and Aman are the same as everyone else, but their home base has brought a relationship with cancer.
We hear about cancer on every corner of every street. In every magazine or image of survival, in every planned marathon or coloured bracelet. It isn’t until you experience it first hand, and through someone you love, that cancer becomes very intimate in knowledge and in reality.
We would like to invite you to read on to hear Aman and Steph’s story. Our time for typing has ended, may your time for sharing begin.
Thank you for your support with some very beautiful people.
July 8-10 | Volunteer Registration
The MC Volunteer Team is looking for some outstanding individuals to volunteer for our July event. Interests in music, food, art, people and friendly experiences are an asset. Volunteers get full admission for the weekend, a volunteer t-shirt, a limited MC tote bag, a $10 gift certificate, a $10 food voucher and a photo booth print voucher. Persons of all ages are welcome to volunteer!
