Market Collective Annual Survey – $800 Prize!

Survey-Insta-02
Market Collective grew from an initial idea, but it quickly became much more than that. The MC is the development of ideas from the artists, food vendors, designers, musicians, and our incredible team of staff and volunteers. Most importantly, it is the reflection of creative thought by all of us, and the beautiful community that has been formed along the way.

We want to extend our sincere gratitude to all of you. To the team that has been incredible, the artists and vendors that have been like family, and the community of visitors that have warmed us with their presence. Now, as we grow into the new year, we want to hear your voices.

We have developed a survey to hear your thoughts, opinions, and to get to know a little bit more about all of you. As we grow, we want to make the right decisions for everyone involved in the MC, and realize that means you. Please take the time to fill out the questions. Some will be simple facts, some will be more insightful, but all will help us make the market you want to see in your city.

As an added thank you, we will randomly choose one lucky person to receive an $800 shopping spree to the Market Collective, redeemable at any of our events.

Thank you, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Deadline for contest entry: August 22nd, winner announced August 24th!

Market Collective Celebrates 8 Years!

Celebrate8-Banner-600x300As Market Collective approaches our 8-Year Anniversary, we can’t help but reflect on how much our community has provided us, and we are incredibly grateful. What started as a humble project has grown in leaps and bounds. We are proud to have contributed our work and passion building Market Collective as a space for the creative class to thrive, to exchange ideas, and ultimately to grow together as a community. This success has been a direct result of the outpourings of each artist, musician and food vendor who have invested their hearts into the creative work they have showcased at each MC event.

We are now at an exciting point in our organization, and have decided that in lieu of hosting an Anniversary event, we will focus on our growth, both internally and externally. Over the next 3 months we will dedicate ourselves in honouring our roots, growing as an organization, and generating new ideas for upcoming events.

With growth comes celebration! For the month of August, we will be sharing 8 exciting announcements for Market Collective, including new developments and meaningful organizational additions. We wish to give back to the community that has been so pivotal in our growth and with us through this journey.

Stay posted on our Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Website, for your chance to win gift baskets, huge sponsorships, cash prizes and learn all about the behind the scenes additions that we plan to unfold! We look forward to connecting with you all through our social media engagements!

JULY MC | MUSICIAN SCHEDULE | 2016

Friday, July 8 >>> Tomi Fujiyama <<< 8pm
Screen Shot 2016-07-06 at 1.10.46 AM

“Made in Japan” is the remarkable story of Tomi Fujiyama, the world’s first Japanese country music superstar. From playing the USO circuit throughout Asia to headlining in Las Vegas and recording 5 albums for Columbia records, Tomi’s career culminates in a 1964 performance at The Grand Ole Opry where she followed Johnny Cash and received the only standing ovation of the night.

At the age of 73, with a spark in her heart and a guitar in her hand, Tomi and her husband set out on a journey through Japan and across the United States to fulfill a dream of performing at The Grand Ole Opry one more time. Tomi weaves an inspirational and often hilarious story of hope and heartbreak.

“Made in Japan” is a funny yet poignant multi-cultural journey through music, marriage, and the impact of the corporate world on the dreams of one woman.

MC DEBUT ARTIST | WILDROPE | JENNY BALLANCE

Screen Shot 2016-06-24 at 3.24.57 PMJenny Balance: smart, beautiful, and sophisticated, she is the brains behind Wild Rope, a new company based on the love of dogs and style. Based on a traditional nautical technique, Jenny splices and whips her own rope, and then uses a technique of traditional dyeing to blend design with function. Each rope is 100% cotton, and 110% sweet. We had a chance to chat with Jenny and learn more about this craft, the new endeavour and to celebrate her as this July MC’s Debut Artist.

IMG_0163

Tell us a little about your business and how you got started:
I make dog leashes made from 100% Cotton Rope here in Calgary. Each leash is hand dyed, spliced and whipped which gives them a super unique look. The cotton makes for a really soft leash on the hands and allows some stretch and give while walking your dog.
I started making rope leashes because I was on the hunt myself for one and began to look them up online and at stores. During my search, I realized there really weren’t many options and I might just be able to make my own. I quickly learned how to “splice” and “whip” the 3-strand cotton rope. This is an old nautical technique used by sailors and fishman, making the handles and ends of the leash strong and sturdy. I played with dyes and colours, and hunted high and low for good quality trigger snaps.
You have such a unique idea and clearly love dogs. What is your favourite thing about dogs?
Thanks! I don’t know what I don’t love about dogs! Their companionship, quirky habits and endless entertainment have to be a few of my favourite qualities.

I have a one year old Whippet, named Wylee. She is my number one WildRope model and tester. She is always by our side wherever we go and has really made our lives full of so much happiness.

Calgary is a beautiful place to walk and enjoy nature. What are some of your usual stomping grounds?
Calgary is the best! You can find us anywhere from Fish Creek walking along the river and awesome pathways, Britannia for a Village Ice Cream then a walk down to Sandy Beach, East Village for a walk on the pathways, on the patio’s of 17th Ave or 4th Street, or at one of Calgary’s dog parks, which are HUGE!
You have been chosen as the Market Collective Debut Artist. What are you most excited about with joining MC?
I can’t even believe it, I am SO flattered. I have been going to Market Collective over the past few years and always admired the highly talented artists and makers and their work. I never would have believed I would actually be apart of the action.
I love spreading the word of MC, when I ask someone if they have heard of it and they haven’t, I make sure to tell them they must check it out.
MC and the culture that comes with it is so infectious and full of local love. It is all about that support and appriciation for hard work. I have already met and learned a lot from so many wonderful people through MC and hope to meet even more!
How can people get ahold of you, or connect more with you and your work?
Right now, email is the easiest! jenny@wildrope.ca
To have a look at some leashes you can always check out Instagram @wildrope
We are working on a website which will be up and running soon, and I always try to keep a few leashes on Etsy.

PLEASE SHARE YOUR LOVE

Aman and Steph

At the Market Collective, we have worked with thousands of artists and supporters over the years. Some people pop in and move on, and others stay to become your family of friends.

We met Aman and Steph over their amazing food from Naaco, and simply saw them as a quirky couple that made delicious treats. We fell in love with them, and their support to the MC has been phenomenal. However, life exists far beyond the MC weekend walls, and everyone at the end of Sunday’s mayhem packs up and ends up back at home base. Steph and Aman are the same as everyone else, but their home base has brought a relationship with cancer.

We hear about cancer on every corner of every street. In every magazine or image of survival, in every planned marathon or coloured bracelet. It isn’t until you experience it first hand, and through someone you love, that cancer becomes very intimate in knowledge and in reality.

We would like to invite you to read on to hear Aman and Steph’s story. Our time for typing has ended, may your time for sharing begin.

Thank you for your support with some very beautiful people.
